STOP ASKING DUMB ASS QUESTIONS
I can’t believe I have to say this to adult men and women but stop asking stupid ass questions to professional athletes. Recently, Naomi Osaka dropped out of the French Open because she didn’t want to appear at press conferences due to anxiety and depression. She went on to say in a post on social media that part of the cause was the media. Most of us won’t ever understand the frustration of answering press conference questions. If you think she’s being unprofessional about the situation, I would ask you to think about it in this way. Have you ever tried to explain something to your child or children and have them ask you the same questions over and over? How long does it take for you to become exasperated because they don’t understand? How long does it take you to drop the go-to phrase “because I said so”? Being a parent is hard enough, but struggling to answer your child’s questions can lead to a completely different level of frustration. Now imagine once you poorly answer your kid’s questions, they went and wrote an article about it. Imagine doing a press conference after every terrible trip to Target or Walmart. How about answering questions from coworkers press conference style when you drop the ball with a work project. You face some of the same issues these athletes do because their at work just like you. The only difference is no one is paying to watch you deliver Amazon packages and question your box placement at the end of your route.
Reporters ask terrible questions! If you think I’m full of shit, let’s revisit some of your favorite coaches and players who have famously melted down at these press conferences. There are plenty to choose from by the way, let’s hit a few.
“playoffs.... you talking about playoffs.”
“They are who we thought they were.”
“Practice..... we talking about practice.”
“I’m just here so I don’t get fined.”
There is a countless number of examples. Don’t forget most head coaches don’t say shit at these press conferences. Most of them are assholes like Bill Belich and Nick Saban. Then they get pissed if you
Challenge them. Have you ever thought of Bill Belickh as weak or Nick Saban as soft because they couldn’t handle a question from a reporter? Would you have said the same thing about them if they told you they couldn’t do press conferences anymore because of the stress being detrimental to their mental health? Only you know the answer to that question.
Mental health awareness is at an all-time high and I would like to think it shouldn’t take a suicide attempt for this young woman to get the help and relief she may need to get better and back to the top of her game.
She is the second-best player in the world at her sport and I would think the WTA would have great interest in her continuing her career in a sport that needs American players to succeed. I’m not asking that you agree with her stance I’m just hoping you can see why she took it.
